Editorial Services
Editing must meet the needs of different jobs for various clients. To help you determine the type of editorial service you want or need, I offer the following definitions of levels of editing service I provide. All levels can be provided electronically or on hard-copy, as preferred by the client.
Clarification Editing
In addition to covering all items listed in the descriptions of copyproofing and copyediting, clarification editing goes beyond whether the text "follows the rules" by considering the use of language to clearly and effectively communicate the author's intent. This level of editing addresses the following:
- Unclear or vague wording
- Wordiness, triteness, inappropriate jargon
- Overly long or adjective-heavy sentence construction
- Syntax
- Verification of spelling of proper nouns
- Accuracy of text and figure references
- Consistency in wording of all graphics accompanying text
- Previews, summaries, and abstracts (ensuring accurate reflection of content)
- Consistent style and tone
- Passive voice (i.e., changing to active voice if appropriate)
