Editorial Services
Editing must meet the needs of different jobs for various clients. To help you determine the type of editorial service you want or need, I offer the following definitions of levels of editing service I provide. All levels can be provided electronically or on hard-copy, as preferred by the client.
Copyproofing
Copyproofing (also known as editorial proofing) is usually sufficient for material that has already been reviewed (or edited) by others and now needs only a final check for overlooked errors. This level of editing comprises reading a manuscript or document to correct indisputable errors such as the following:
- Typos
- Extra spaces
- Misnumbering or mislabeling
- Incorrect or outdated cross-references
For typeset material, copyproofing also includes checking for the following:
- Incorrect word breaks
- Widows and orphans
- Font type and size irregularities
- Appropriate use of single and double quotes
- Headers and footers
- Tables of contents
- Lists of figures, tables, and abbreviations and acronyms
