All the Write Stuff

Credentials

Experience

For more than 30 years as a writer and more than 20 years as an editor, I have been producing materials for print and broadcast media for a variety of clients, organizations, and employers. Following are some of the highlights of the professional communications work I have done over the years:

  • As a senior technical writer and editor at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory for three years, I wrote and edited technical reports, brochures, journal articles, and presentations; and I coordinated writing, editing, and production of CD-ROM materials. After leaving the laboratory, I continued to work, as a freelancer, on the lab's Yucca Mountain Project technical reports for Science and Engineering Associates.

  • I also prepared environmental reports and proposals for Levine·Fricke Recon and edited the company's award-winning style guide.

  • While employed by the Alaska Department of Natural Resources, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, and Arizona Department of Game and Fish, I prepared many types of public outreach and public information materials, including brochures, newsletters, media releases, web site content, slide shows, radio and television spots, and newspaper and magazine articles. In Arizona, I was the editor of the department's monthly four-color magazine.

  • I have edited several books, including  Independence Mine (and the Willow Creek Mining Project) for the Alaska State Park System;  The Bicyclist's Guide to the Southern Berkshires by Steve Lyons; and  Living Across and Through Skins by Professor Shannon Sullivan,  Adam's Contract with Satan by Dr. Michael E. Stone, and  Temples for Tomorrow (a collection of essays about the Harlem Renaissance) by Fabre and Feith, et al., for Indiana University Press.

  • During my tenure as a contract writer and editor for AirTouch International, I wrote and edited a number of license applications, proposals, and start-up plans for cellular telecommunications systems in countries outside the United States. I also wrote a guide to GMS cellular systems and wrote, edited, and supervised production of the company's document style guide, which won an international award.

  • On contract to the National Park Service, I researched, wrote, and edited educational and visitor center exhibit materials and text for online interactive visitor guides for the Alaska Public Lands Information Centers throughout the state. I also edited exhibit materials for the Portage Glacier Visitors Center under a contract with the USDA Forest Service.

  • I have written, edited, and coordinated production of newsletters for more than half a dozen organizations and agencies, including the Alaska State Council on the Arts, the White Alice Communications System, and the Alaska Native Commission on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse.

  • As project coordinator for IntelliTools, Inc., I wrote, edited, and handled production of numerous marketing materials as well as user guides and manuals for computer hardware and software.

  • I have written numerous articles, columns, and reviews for publications such as Alaska Airlines' in-flight magazine,  Alaska magazine,  Anchorage Daily News, Anchorage Times, Alaska Advocate, The Shotgunner, and  The Kripalu Experience.

  • I have been a professional copywriter for several advertising and public relations agencies as well as for two radio stations.
